01:57 am - My awesome dog Princess Sappho

MY AWESOME DOG PRINCESS SAPPHO

On the beach, right before dawn
we stroll on the edge of the surf, step by step
sometimes through waters stepping on the moon
sometimes on the sand still cold and wet

My dog in her best “hunting” mood
hair risen, tail straight, and nose to the ground
white shadow stalking seagulls basking on the sand
inching forward slowly pace by pace

Then, all of the sudden, cutting to the chase
running and lunging, jumping, skipping waves
stopping, turning, breaking in a full gallop

There is a pep in her step, grace in her chase
her dotty flappy white ears flying high
sweeping stardust off a boundless sky

I tell her, you are one awesome sweet bitch.
She replies hm, hm, hm, ah, ah, ah
stretches, bows and smiles, and looks into my eyes
and shakes her body, wags her tail, even tries to lick me

So, to know how she really feels
I point to a dark spot on the very top her head
and say, “You are one ugly dog
with your web paws, white fur, and this third eye
no one would let you in to a bar or a jazz club
or even a poetry reading in a coffee house

She responds hm, hm, hm, ah, ah, ah
looks at me and wants to lick me again
and bows, and pants, and paws the air
and wags her tail just the same
as she did last night when I told her
that my friend, a certain Muse, said
she’s a real cutie, a really loving dog.
One lucky bitch having so much fun on a Texan beach

So, to change the pace, I throw at her
an intellectual, intercultural, even interspecies zinger.

I tell her, “Sometimes some people do not care
about animal rights, suffering, and welfare.
For example, if you were born in Vietnam or Korea
someone would likely have you for dinner
for they eat there pretty dogs like you.”

That’s what I tell her, but what does she hear?

Blah blahblahblah blah blahblah
blah blahblahblah blah blahblah
blah blah blahblah blah blah blahblah
blahblah DINNER blah blah blah

“Dinner! Dinner!” she hears
and her tail picks up lots of pace
one silly dog, crazy

like the ancient sage Lao tse or Sidhartha
looking past the arbitrary meaning of words
to the very essence of things
cutting straight to the chase
chasing birds, skipping waves
her flappy dotty white ears flying high
painting rainbow on a boundless sky
