09:34 pm - Solar Eclipse (05 20 2012)

New Moon again
playing tricks with my mind
and body
      I watch
the eclipse wondering

who pays attention
and what does it mean
to save all beings?

each day each night tides leave
hundreds of jellyfish on the sands
I return one to the ocean
but how can I save them all?

"when one is truly saved all
are saved", say the Scriptures
but this defies reason
for what about all the rest

still what if one's chant is
thunder strong
cutting through all
the illusions
cutting through many and one
what is left then?

the sun slip-slides behind the line of horizon
yet the light lingers
as if memories
of all bad deeds
and a few good ones

I returns
to an empty home
too tired to rest and sleep

I try
every mantra
every dharani I know

12:43 pm - Earthlings

The movie (for me) to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkLt88_u5lQ

Some endorsements: "Of all the films I have ever made, this is the one that gets people talking the most. For every one person who sees Earthlings, they will tell three" (Joaquin Phoenix).

"If I could make everyone in the world see one film, I'd make them see Earthlings" (Peter Singer, the author of "Animal Liberation").

"For those who watch Earthlings, the world will never be the same" (Tom Regan, the author of "The Case for Animal Rights").

08:43 am - game night (Miami Heat @ San Anton Spurs)

I went to San Anton yesterday to see the King and the Heat battling the local boys; not a good game. Spulstra decided to not play LeBron and Wade and it felt to me like he was playing mind games with Pop, which totally deflated the energy. Pop did no play Ginobilli so, there was lots of talent missing in action.

Lots of Miami fans in the house, which was a surprise; they were quite loud during the game. Lots of folks wearing other teams regalia (mostly the Lakers).I had to leave my camera at the guest room so I do not have any good photos to show. Still, as you probably know, it all went down to the last shot (the last few shots in fact - San Anton made, Miami made, SA missed was the sequence, iirc) and the Heat prevailed. But, until the last q (mabe the last few minutes), the game did not have playoff level intensity and energy.

Still, a good experience... but mostly because of a great conversation with my buddy, Jeff (also a philosopher). We were mostly talking about philosophy and poetry as I am writing a paper on just this topic -- "Poetry as a Form of Philosophical Expression", to be presented at the conference in about 2 weeks.

08:09 pm - for all librarians

I used as a prompt photos of a certain librarian(*) in glasses,
holding in her teeth a red pencil, reading Albert Camu's "Plague",
a white dog resting at her feet.

for all librarians

when the time of pestilence came
and they had to face locust, plague, drought, and fire
sent by Enemies of the Books (you never know about this
"Eat Party" folk, they talk the talk but do they walk the walk?
yes they yap a lot about deficit reduction and freedoms
that big government can take away but
push comes to shove, if they could they would
take away your books and force you to read the Book
and Ayn Rand, anyway) Read more...Collapse )

11:47 pm - GRAY
(comment and suggestions welcome)

I am Gray. I have no hope

my waiting --
old trash floating in stolen waters
gravel sifting through numb fingers
the number of poppy seeds that you count
while trying and not being able to fall asleep
no anticipation at all for this
opens the door to hope and I do not wish
to have hope, I am Gray

Some think I am cold, like ice
perhaps they saw me only from a distance
only for a moment or two, never touched me
for when you take me in your hand I feel
more like ashes from an old fire
mixed with melting early Autumn snow

Some think I am smooth-jazz
I must admit, an apt and witty comparison
even if a bit insulting for
indeed there is something boring in gray

Surely, I am not a golden rill
of hues from Fats Navaro's trumpet
nor am I a weaver of muted notes from Miles's horn
but I am not a pretty line of Kenny G, either
prettiness attracts attention, I am much more plain
I am Gray, as distant from the sun as
the dark side of Jupiter covered by thick clouds
you would notice me only through
contrast with the light

Sometimes Blue sends raindrops my way
splat... splat... splat... splatting
on the surface of my windows
"How are you, Gray? Are you sad?"

But I have locked my home, I wish no guests
a telephone ring puts me in a state of panic

I listen to rain
but I do not feel it on my skin
outdoors seem too challenging
stream and pond too distant to walk

(besides, I am afraid --
if I look deep in the waters
I may only find mud)

So, I hear songs of the birds
yet do not try to hear a melody
I do not try to follow them

For there is a hope in a birds' flight
when they vanish behind the horizon
carrying with them many Springs

yet there is no hope in me, I am Gray
I watch the world through the rainy windows
drifting away with a distant blues from the Delta

09:55 am - progress (and lack of progress) report

March 22, 2013. Not really a big deal, except for...
I have not been below 175 since the 80s.

Usually, the weight will not stay like this, not on the first try
(or the first break through a psychological barrier).
For me, it usually takes 3-4 tries before I can maintain it.
It's different this time; I've been below 175 for 3 straight days.
It looks like my recent diet adjustments work really well

10:35 am - leaving home (Buddhism)
Keizan, in the Denkoroku or Transmission of Light, said this:

"For Buddhists, there are basically two forms of departure, which are physical and mental. Leaving home physically means that they cast away love and affection, leave their homes and birthplaces, shave their heads, don monks' robes, do not have male or female servants, become monks or nuns, and make an effort in the Way throughout the twenty-four hours of each day. Whatever the time, they do not pass it in vain. They desire nothing else. They neither delight in life nor fear death. Their minds are as pure as the autumn moon; their eyes are as clear as a bright mirror. They do not seek Mind nor do they hanker [to see] their [original] natures. They do not cultivate the holy truth, much less worldly attachments. In this way, they do not abide in the stage of ordinary folk or cherish the rank of the wise and holy, but more and more become mindless seekers of the way. These are people who leave home physically.

Those who leave home in spirit do not shave their heads or wear monks' clothing. Even though they live at home and remain among worldly cares, they are like lotuses, which are not soiled by the mud [in which they grow], or jewels, which are immune to [contamination by] dust. Even though there are karmic conditions so that they have wives and children, they consider them trash and dust (alternate translation: they are not attached). They do not entertain love for even a moment or covet anything. Like the moon suspended in the sky, like a ball rolling around on a tray, they live in the noisy city and see one who is tranquil (alternate translation: they see the One who is free). In the midst of the three realms, they clarify the fact that they dwell beyond time. They realize that exterminating the passions is a sickness, and that aiming for ultimate reality is wrong. They realize that both nirvana and samsara are illusions, and they are not attached to either enlightenment or the passions. These are people who leave home in spirit."
